A major water company in the North of England has significantly improved sludge tank performance and reduced maintenance headaches by replacing problematic pumps with robust, long-lasting Landia Chopper Pumps.
Initially, the switch to Landia was prompted by a broken seal on one of the existing pumps—an issue compounded by high replacement costs and long lead times for parts. After installing a Landia Chopper Pump for combined pumping and mixing duties, the utility company saw immediate, positive results.
Encouraged by the improved performance and reliability, the water company has since replaced two more underperforming units with Landia’s proven technology.
“The original pumps weren’t just costly to maintain,” explained Howard Burton of Landia, “they also demanded constant manual adjustment, adding to operational inefficiencies. In contrast, our Chopper Pumps require minimal intervention and have a far lower total cost of ownership.”
Landia’s close-coupled design offers another key advantage: a smaller footprint. “This makes them ideal for installations with limited space, where larger pumps simply won’t fit,” Burton added.
Now in its 75th year, the Landia Chopper Pump—first introduced in 1950—continues to demonstrate its durability and effectiveness. According to the water company, sludge tank performance remains consistently high, if not improved, without the operational burdens of the previous equipment.
