Sweco Secures SEK 121 million contract to update Poland’s flood risk management plans

Sweco has been awarded a SEK 121 million contract by Polish Waters, Poland’s national water authority, to review and update flood risk management plans across the country. The agreement, which runs from 2026 to 2028, reinforces Sweco’s position as a leading provider of climate resilience, water management, and flood protection solutions in Europe.

The project forms a key part of Poland’s obligations under the European Union Floods Directive, which aims to reduce flood risks, protect communities and infrastructure, and strengthen long-term climate resilience across member states. As climate change increases the frequency and severity of extreme weather events, effective flood risk management has become a critical priority for governments and water authorities throughout Europe.

Under the contract, Sweco will lead a consortium responsible for updating flood risk management plans for six major river basin districts in Poland, including the Vistula and Oder river basins. The updated plans will support national and regional authorities in identifying flood hazards, assessing risks, and implementing measures to improve preparedness and reduce the impact of future flood events.

Maciej Chrzanowski, President of Sweco in Poland, highlighted the strategic importance of the project in strengthening the country's resilience to climate-related flooding.

Sweco has built a strong partnership with Polish Waters (Państwowe Gospodarstwo Wodne Wody Polskie) through a range of projects focused on flood risk reduction, reservoir design, water infrastructure development, and climate adaptation strategies. The company's extensive experience in hydrology, hydraulic engineering, and environmental planning positions it as a trusted advisor for large-scale water management projects across Europe.

The new contract also reflects the growing demand for climate adaptation and flood resilience investments across the continent. Governments and infrastructure operators are increasingly prioritising flood protection, water security, and sustainable water management as they respond to rising climate risks and evolving regulatory requirements.

The project aligns with findings from Sweco's recent report, Too Much, Too Little, Too Polluted, which highlights the increasing challenges facing Europe's water systems. Drawing on data from multiple European markets and Sweco's extensive expertise in the water sector, the report underscores the urgent need for integrated approaches to flood management, drought resilience, water quality improvement, and climate adaptation.

Through this latest contract, Sweco will contribute to strengthening Poland's flood resilience strategy while supporting broader European efforts to improve climate adaptation, safeguard communities, and protect critical infrastructure from the growing impacts of climate change.
