International environmental firm SLR Consulting (UK) has delivered a five-day training course on wastewater management for the Ministry of Natural Resources and the Environment (MNRE) in Samoa.

The course, on the principles of wastewater treatment and disposal, was presented by SLR UK Principal Ian Andrews, from the company’s Process Engineering Group, following a successful initial tender by SLR Australia.

It is part of a wider commitment by the government of Samoa through the MNRE, to improve its wastewater infrastructure and reduce waterborne infections.

Those attending the event, including wastewater treatment works operators, doctors and nurses from the Ministry of Health and officers within the MNRE, were addressed on the development of long-term action plans to improve water quality across the island.

Ian, who is based at SLR UK’s office in Huddersfield, said: “The course highlighted our capabilities and expertise and how SLR can provide assistance with strategies for the development of matters ranging from wastewater treatment to municipal solids waste infrastructure.

“Despite English being the second language of a number of the course attendees, it was encouraging to see how committed everyone is to improving wastewater treatment and disposal for the benefit of this fascinating and beautiful Island.”
