The Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) has signed a loan with the Republic of Mauritius to reconstruct the island’s sewage facilities.

The ODA loan, worth USD $81000, will be used to connect households to an existing sewerage plant in the Grand Baie region, in the northern part of the country, by constructing new sewer pipes and pump stations.

The initiative will radically increase the sewage coverage ratio across the region and spread the benefits of sewage facilities for public health and the environment to a greater number of residents – and visitors.

Grand Baie is indeed one of Mauritius’ major touristic regions, thanks to its abundant coral reefs, sugar cane fields and stunning natural beauty. However, only 10% of all houses and commercial developments are currently connected to the sewerage system, and some water from unconnected buildings may reach the sea and groundwater untreated.
