Pumps ensure substantial raw water transfer at the Platte River West Project

Dec 03 2009

When the Omaha Municipal Utility District was looking to equip the new Platte River West Water Treatment Plant, they turned to Yeomans Chicago (USA), a Grundfos-owned company, and invested in Morris 7100 pumps.

The Morris brand stands for tough, heavy-duty pumps manufactured by Yeomans Chicago Corporation, and Morris pumps can handle the variable flow requirements at a water treatment plant. This ensures a pumping solution that is durable, with reliable water transfer at high flow and low head for the duration.

The Omaha Municipal Utility District provides drinking water to approximately 200,000 customer owners in Nebraska. In 2008, the Omaha Municipal Utility District opened the Platte West Project, a water treatment facility costing USD 352 million designed to meet the growing water demands of the metro Omaha area for the next 50 to 60 years.

The project includes a well field, raw water main, water treatment plant and finished water mains. In addition to these required infrastructure improvements, the project is incorporating state of the art security features which may serve as a model for other utilities. With 42 wells supplying water through a four-mile-long pipeline to the water treatment plant, the volume of raw water transport is very high and this project offered many challenges. The project is designed to boost the district’s pumping capacity by 100 million gallons per day.

To cope with the raw water volume at the treatment plant, variable speed Morris Series 7100 Type EC and MF pumps in HBB configuration were chosen for the treatment plant’s Finished Water Transfer and Backwash Supply applications. The high quality, rugged design and heavy-duty construction features of the Morris Pumps will help to assure reliable service and minimal maintenance expense over the lifetime of the facility.

Reliable high flow, low head raw water transfer at a water treatment plant requires a powerful and durable pumps system. Typically supplied in special materials constructed for the intended service, the Morris 7100 pumps are very resistant to abrasion. A minimized footprint reduces the space and construction costs associated with the intake structure.

The Morris 7100 pumps used in this case are high flow, low head pumps, with a wide and stable hydraulic operating range to meet the variable flow requirements for the finished water pumps at variable speed operation. This maintains the highest possible system operating efficiency.

For over 150 years, Morris pumps have been built using proven design and manufacturing methods. This rich history combines with an effective utilization of today’s engineering methods and technologies to bring a pumping solution built for superior performance. Yeomans Chicago Corporation, the manufacturers of Morris pumps, is a Grundfos-owned company.
