Biogas derived from agricultural waste will be converted into premium bioLNG

Jun 29 2023

Wärtsilä, has been chosen to provide expertise and equipment for an influential bioLNG project in Sweden. This comprehensive solution from Wärtsilä will enhance the quality of biogas derived from agricultural waste and convert it into premium bioLNG. The order for this installation has been placed by Gasum AB and will be located near Götene, Sweden.

Upon completion, Wärtsilä's solution will have the capacity to produce 25 tons of bioLNG daily. BioLNG is produced by purifying biogas, eliminating hydrogen sulphide (H2S), carbon dioxide (CO2), and water vapor, and subsequently liquefying it at a chilling -160 °C. This process results in bioLNG with equivalent calorific value and properties, making it an environmentally sustainable fuel that seamlessly integrates with fossil LNG.

"The Götene biogas plant project holds immense significance for us. It marks the beginning of five major biogas plant projects we have planned for Sweden in the years to come. Following a meticulous and extensive procurement phase, we are delighted to finalise the agreement with Wärtsilä. We have high expectations for the equipment and services and are confident that Wärtsilä will meet them," affirmed Eero Lallukka, Senior Manager of Procurement at Gasum.

"Wärtsilä's corporate strategy revolves around decarbonising our customers' operations. Our biogas upgrading and liquefaction capabilities, deployed for this bioLNG facility, perfectly align with this commitment. We eagerly anticipate supporting Gasum as they expand their operations and promote green fuel alternatives," commented Rolf Håkansson, Business Development Manager of Biogas Solutions at Wärtsilä Gas Solutions.

The comprehensive supply package from Wärtsilä encompasses the delivery, installation, and commissioning of the upgrading and liquefaction equipment. Delivery is scheduled for August 2024, with the facility expected to achieve full operational status at the outset of 2025.
