Largest Wet Weather Installation in the U.S.Awarded

Kruger Inc. (USA), a Veolia business unit specialised in water treatment solutions for municipalities, will provide design services, process equipment and commissioning support to the Design Build Team of PC / CDM Smith as part of a contract from the District of Columbia (DC Water) to install its ACTIFLO technology to process and treat wet weather flows.

Kruger will implement three 83 MGD ACTIFLO trains for a total treatment capacity of 250 MGD at the Blue Plains Advanced Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP). This installation will be the largest ever designed for the ACTIFLO technology in the US. To help plan for potential future wet weather treatment expansions, the current project design takes into consideration a total treatment capacity of 500 MGD which would be accomplished with the addition of three more ACTIFLO trains. The Blue Plains Advanced WWTP is currently one of the largest advanced wastewater plants in the world and has an outstanding reputation both nationally and internationally as a result of its innovation and excellent compliance record with federal regulations.

Excess wet weather flow will be pumped through screening and grit removal from a newly constructed tunnel, then to the ACTIFLO clarification process as part of the plant’s expansion. This ACTIFLO system, expected to be fully operational in 2018, will provide Blue Plains with the ability to process and treat wet weather flows as described in the Blue Plains Total Nitrogen and Wet Weather plan. The system’s compact footprint, high degree of operational flexibility and cost-efficient maintenance will give the Blue Plains Advanced WWTP a superior process technology that will help ensure that the facility meets current and future demands.
