Green energy
Malaysia’s first biomethane injection site
May 23 2025
Evonik has partnered with Gas Malaysia to bring to life the country’s first biomethane injection facility—an initiative that sets a new benchmark in Malaysia’s journey toward a low-carbon economy. The collaboration, formalised through a Memorandum of Collaboration, marks a significant step forward in sustainable energy and was celebrated during the inauguration of the injection site, recognised by the Malaysia Book of Records. The ceremony was officiated by YB Datuk Seri Johari bin Abdul Ghani, Malaysia’s Minister of Plantation and Commodities.
At the heart of this breakthrough is Evonik’s SEPURAN® Green membrane technology, designed to upgrade raw biogas into high-purity biomethane suitable for direct injection into local natural gas grids. Using an energy-efficient, three-stage separation process, the membranes offer a sustainable alternative to conventional biogas treatment methods—requiring no chemicals or additional materials.
“SEPURAN® Green is redefining how biomethane is produced and used,” said Dr. Jan-Olaf Barth, head of Evonik’s High Performance Polymers business line. “By deploying our membrane technology in Malaysia’s gas infrastructure, we are helping to cut carbon emissions and broaden access to renewable energy.”
Kenneth Kwok, Managing Director and Country Head of Evonik Malaysia, added: “This collaboration with Gas Malaysia is more than a technology transfer—it’s a commitment to supporting Malaysia’s national goals for sustainability. Together, we’re helping to build a cleaner, greener energy future.”
Evonik’s SEPURAN® Green membranes are already in use in over 1,300 biogas facilities worldwide. Their ability to produce grid-compatible biomethane supports circular economy initiatives and provides industries with a climate-neutral energy source.
As Malaysia positions itself as a regional leader in sustainable energy, this initiative marks a critical step in reducing the nation’s carbon footprint and accelerating the transition to renewable fuels.
