Wood completes preliminary engineering for world's largest carbon capture hub in Saudi Arabia
Jun 10 2024
Wood, a global leader in consulting and engineering, has successfully completed the front-end engineering and design (FEED) for the initial phase of Aramco's Accelerated Carbon Capture and Sequestration (ACCS) project in Saudi Arabia. Once completed, this will be the largest carbon capture and sequestration (CCS) hub in the world.
The first phase of the ACCS project aims to significantly reduce carbon emissions from Aramco's gas plant facilities near Jubail on Saudi Arabia's east coast, as well as from third-party emitters. This effort aligns with Aramco's broader goals to enhance its upstream operations' environmental performance.
Wood's role included designing the greenfield dehydration and compression facilities and creating an extensive pipeline network. This network features a 200+ kilometre dense-phase CO2 pipeline, intended to transport 9 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) of emissions to be sequestered in onshore geological formations by 2027. Aramco's long-term objective is to store up to 14 MTPA of CO2 by 2035, contributing to Saudi Arabia's goal of sequestering 44 MTPA by that year.
Craig Shanaghey, Wood’s Executive President of Projects, stated, “We are proud to be at the forefront of designing the future of energy. Leveraging our 20 years of experience in carbon capture engineering, we are bringing the ACCS project to life and supporting Aramco's energy security and transition ambitions."
He added, “The United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) emphasizes the significant role CCS can play in achieving the 2-degree goal of the Paris Agreement. Projects like this are crucial for reducing the carbon emissions of heavy industries and making tangible progress in global climate efforts.”
The FEED phase was executed by approximately 200 engineers from Wood's global Projects and Consulting business units, demonstrating the company's extensive expertise and capability in carbon capture and sequestration technologies.
