Air Clean Up
Newly-developed inert gas purge unit for explosion hazardous areas
Aug 20 2009
In the chemical and pharmaceutical industries, mechanical separation is an important process in which Flottweg decanters and disc stack centrifuges assume key functions: They clarify liquids, separate two liquids, classify solids, sort solid mixtures, and dewater liquid-solid suspensions.
If centrifuges are used to process media whose vapors, when mixed with aerial oxygen generate an explosive mixture, the risk of explosion has to be eliminated by replacing air with inert gas. Generally, pure nitrogen is used for this purpose. Centrifuges and system parts used for the processing of hazardous materials have to be gastight to prevent the exit of vapors into the atmosphere as well as to avoid the entry of air into the system. Inert gas is injected at several parts of the centrifuge in order to provide optimal purging and inert gas blanketing inside the centrifuge. The inert gas purge unit manufactured by Flottweg (Germany) controls the individual inert gas streams. Differential pressure monitoring with integrated automatic regulation is a special feature of the Flottweg inert gas purge unit. Control valves provide a specific constant blanketing pressure inside the sealed system. The need for manual readjustment becomes unnecessary.Events
