Commendation made in Rushlight Awards 2013

Feb 07 2013

Eminox (UK), specialist emissions technology manufacturer, has been commended in the ‘clean environment’ category at this year’s Rushlight Awards for the latest developments in its SCRT retrofit technology for heavy duty vehicles. This category recognises the most significant technological development or innovation that prevents, reduces or treats pollution or noise or other such contamination of land, water or air.

The Eminox SCRT specialist exhaust system has been in development since 2004 and its use has been growing since 2008 with over 1,000 systems retrofitted in the UK (Edinburgh and Oxford), Belgium, Spain and Sweden reducing emissions of PM (particulate matter), NOx (oxides of Nitrogen), HC (hydrocarbons) and CO (Carbon Monoxide) from city buses. In order to meet specific concerns about NO2 pollution in London, a new version of the SCRT system has been developed to specifically target reduction of primary NO2 emissions as well as maintaining other emission reductions.

As part of a TfL pilot project for London buses this new variant of SCRT technology delivered outstanding results across a range of pollutants, even when operating in urban environments. Independent tests carried out on the MLTB cycle, which simulates London operating conditions, demonstrated reductions of almost 90% of NOx and more than 50% of primary NO2, exceeding targets set by TfL. It is expected that up to 900 London buses will be retrofitted with this new generation SCRT technology.

Kathye Henderson, Marketing Manager at Eminox said, “As we enter the European Year of Air we are absolutely delighted that our SCRT technology has been commended by the Rushlight Awards. The reality is that we will be reliant on heavy duty diesel vehicles for the foreseeable future so technology to mitigate its effect on public health can make an extremely important contribution to improving air quality.”

The Rushlight Awards were announced at a Gala Dinner at the Royal College of Surgeons in London. The evening was attended by CEOs, directors and technology heads of leading clean technology companies in the UK’s energy and sustainability industry and included a key note from the Minister of State at the Department of Energy and Climate Change, Greg Barker.
