UK cold front creates high air pollution levels

Dec 17 2013

London has experienced low levels of air quality as cold weather has led to higher amounts of air pollution being trapped near ground level. 'Very high' levels of air pollution were measured in London on December 12th, with cold weather thought to be one of the main reason behind the increase, reports Air Quality News.

Areas across the UK have been subjected to higher than normal amounts of ground level air pollution as a result of sustained cold temperatures. Levels in London and south Wales were recorded as being 'very high' as a result of the dip in temperatures, which is the fourth time this year that such low levels of air quality were recorded within the UK, according to the news provider.

As a result of the increase in air pollution, Defra has issued health warnings for those who are likely to be affected by diminished air quality. Children and the elderly, along with anyone that suffers from respiratory problems or heart conditions, are advised to reduce time spent outside while the pollution levels persist. They are also advised against doing any strenuous activity.

Defra has also recommended that anyone who is experiencing symptoms of illness, such as sore throats and coughs, reduce the amount of physical activity they are undertaking, especially outside.

While some areas have experienced a slight reduction in air pollution levels, the problem persists in others and could get worse if the cold front continues. The problem has been visible in some areas, such as London, with thick fog causing a number of problems, including delays to travel. It is thought that as cold weather continues that some parts of the UK will experience localised areas of high pollution. It is likely that dust deposits might also affect some places, reports the news provider.

Clean Air in London has reported that the capital has seen a total of 14 smog episodes so far this year, in comparison to only 12 during 2012, despite works to reduce air pollution.
