Veolia Continues Partnership with Severn Trent Water

Veolia Water Technologies (Veolia) has secured a contract to upgrade the treatment process at Trescott Wastewater Treatment Works (WwTW) to meet a tighter ammonia discharge consent of 1 mg/l. As with the recently announced Little Aston WwTW upgrade, this project will use Veolia’s Moving Bed Biofilm Reactor (MBBR) technology to provide a cost-effective solution which will meet current and future needs.

Severn Trent Water and its Tier 1 delivery partner, Mott Macdonald Bentley (MMB), were considering a number of options, including replacing the existing trickling filters with an activated sludge plant, but these presented significant budget challenges. A feasibility study conducted by Severn Trent Water and MMB established that the existing trickling filters were in good condition with a suitable asset life. Veolia therefore worked closely with the project team to develop an MBBR upgrade solution which would enable the existing assets to be retained, providing significant CAPEX and OPEX benefits.

A visit to another sewerage treatment works, Cudworth WwTW, allowed the process engineering and operations teams to see the MBBR technology in action, providing a reassurance of both its ease of operation and process performance. Trescott WwTW will be the fifth Severn Trent Water site to use Veolia’s MBBR technology, demonstrating Veolia’s expertise and credibility in the field, as it continues to pioneer and promote this wastewater treatment solution.
