Water Treatment Output Performance Improved at EDF Plant

Ondeo Industrial Solutions, part of Degrémont Industry, has provided EDF Energy with a water treatment system that has significantly improved pre-treatment plant performance. The successful two week delivery of the project at the new EDF Energy power station in West Burton, Nottinghamshire, underlines Ondeo’s status as the leading solutions provider in the water and wastewater industry.

The new EDF Combined Cycle Gas Turbine (CCGT) power station was commissioned in 2013 and produces 1340 MW, which delivers enough power to supply 1,500,000 homes. EDF Energy awarded the Operations and Maintenance contract for its water systems to Ondeo in response to a number of challenges at the power station.

The Heat Recovery Steam Generators (HRSG) were consuming more water than originally anticipated, which was significantly impacting the performance of the pre-treatment plant. The increased production was in excess of the design production capacity and led to a reduction in water quality. In response, Ondeo rapidly mobilised two O-Mobile temporary water treatment units in order to give EDF a valuable time period in which to rectify the HRSG issues.

During the time window provided by the O-Mobile units, Ondeo completed recovery works on the existing pre-treatment plant, which was required to run at full capacity during this period of high demand. Following a comprehensive review and consultation with EDF, Ondeo replaced the treatment plant’s Sand Filter Media with an improved three-layer Multi Media and all resins in each vessel were moved to a wash tank and cleaned before being replaced. As a result of the speedy and reliable service delivered by Ondeo, the pre-treatment plant now experiences significantly improved output performance.
