Controller and SCADA Systems

Nov 12 2010

ITT has been one of the leading manufacturers of wastewater pumps and agitators for the past few decades. The expertise the company has accumulated in that time has also gone into the electrical components designed to monitor and control pumping stations, rainwater basins, flood protection systems and other wastewater systems.

The Flygt PumpSmart PS 200 changes the speed of wastewater pumps using wastewater-specific parameters. Torque adjustment allows a continuously stable flow rate – the basis for cost-efficient pumping. However, speed control means operating-point modification and therefore the hydraulic conditions also change. This affects the flow conditions in the intake characteristics of the pumps, the hydraulics and the tubing. The PS 200 measures and controls current flow rates and levels, adjusts the speed accordingly and supports the sensor-less, constant-quantity closed-loop control function, for example.

For particularly flat system curves, simple speed adjustments are not an option. Adjusting the torque automatically gives the Flygt PumpSmart PS 200 a stable flow rate and therefore, precise control. At the same time, increases in torque prompt the PS 200 to search for signs of clogs and immediately triggers a cleaning sequence. The pumping efficiency of the PumpSmart reduces costs in the long term and prolongs the service life of pumps while reducing breakdowns and, ultimately, maintenance. The PS 200 is easy to install and operate. It is designed
for use with all types of wet and dry pumps.

Wastewater pumping stations are subject to heavy loads from floating solids, solid substances and deposits. This is why ITT Water & Wastewater provides a variety of mature stationary switching-device solutions that are compatible with individual cases and comply with the rigorous requirements of the ATEX directive. In order to visualise this process, ITT Water & Wastewater has developed its own software: AquaView SCADA system. It is particularly user friendly. The Windows user interface facilitates simple procedures for dialling into a substation and administering it with respect to parameter changes, data evaluation or integrating additional systems. AquaView is network compatible and, depending on the settings, sends alerts via SMS or email. The AquaView package’s primary advantage is that it supports the integration of systems and therefore saves operators additional costs.

ITT Water & Wastewater provides the Flygt WebServer to municipalities that do not have the opportunity to procure a complete SCADA system. By means of simple Internet access, this service allows them to control their own pumping stations. To do this, individual pumping stations are equipped with a modem and connected to the Flygt WebServer. The data is stored centrally and can be opened from there. The Internet provides access to the system at all times for status verification and reports or trend data control – of course access is protected by
password. The service allows pumping station operators to monitor their entire systems without major financial investments and at low, predictable costs. ITT Water & Wastewater also provides a graduated Web-service model that includes everything from quick data access to alert management (24/7) or system analysis and optimisation.
