Salsnes Advanced Primary Treatment Systems is Revolution in WWTP Design, Saving Municipality Millions in Plant Upgrade

Mar 24 2010

Evergreen Engineering Ltd is pleased to announce the successful installation and commissioning of a Salsnes advanced primary treatment system at Castletroy Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) in Ireland. The Castletroy WWTP is designed for 25,000 PE and is operated by Limerick County Council. The treatment design at Castletroy WWTP is an activated sludge process.

The Salsnes filter™ was chosen above other technologies as a capital effective solution to treat increased biological load in the secondary treatment stream which has exceeded its biological design capacity and needed infrastructural expansion. The engineering solution chosen was to remove the organic load prior to the secondary treatment stream in Castletroy WWTP. The following removal efficiency effluent results were achieved using a single Salsnes filter.

50% BOD5 reduction and 70% Total Suspended Solids reduction prior to secondary treatment.

A primary sludge with a dry solids content >30% was produced with no polymer or thermal requirement. The primary sludge was disposed of environmentally through a local composting company.

Installation was above ground and required no additional civil works to the existing inlet works and was completed in 2 months from the placement of order.

The Salsnes Filter™ is a fine mesh sieve, continuous belt technology, which effectively removes solids in a variety of applications. Evergreen Engineering offers exclusively in both the UK and Ireland the Salsnes Filter™ for primary treatment, sludge dewatering, and Combined Sewer Overflow (CSO) applications. The Salsnes Filter™ has been proven to cost-effectively reduce the organic load on downstream processes, increasing biological treatment capacity in existing plants and allowing smaller downstream processes in new plants. The Salsnes Filter™ is pre-engineered, very compact, and easy to install and operate. Due to its modularity, it can be easily combined with existing technology and used in any size of facility.
