ACWA Services’ Nitreat® advanced nitrate removal technology has again been chosen by Anglian Water. The additional systems were selected by the @one Alliance, a collaborative organisation, formed to deliver about half of Anglian Water’s capital investment programme for 2010-2015 and they will be installed at three additional sites across the Anglian region.

The Nitreat® system is based on true counter current continuous ion exchange, using a unique multiport valve to distribute the feed and regeneration flows to multiple resin vessels. For its 12 existing @one Alliance contracts, the company has developed a standard modular design that enables simple, cost-effective installation.

The system offers a considerable degree of flexibility as it can cope with large variations in flow and nitrate levels and produces far less waste regenerant than conventional plants.

The existing systems were installed during AMP4, and subsequently the @one Alliance’s confidence in their robustness has enabled exceptional operational and capital efficiencies to be achieved. The forthcoming installations will be sited at a new 5.8MLD water treatment works at Glandford close to the North Norfolk coast, an existing 6.8MLD works at North Pickenham in mid-Norfolk, and a new 14MLD works at Mousehold, in North East Norwich.

Bob Hastings of ACWA Services, explains: “The ongoing choice of Nitreat® technology by the @one Alliance reflects the system’s robustness, efficiency and operational economy and underlines their confidence in the system. Sustainability is a key concept for the @one Alliance, which fits extremely well with our own approach and we continue to work closely with them to further streamline the Nitreat® technology and ensure it continues to be the most robust and simple nitrate removal technology available”.
