SWR (UK) with specialist recycling services designed specifically for the automotive industry, has won the waste contract to supply one of the south’s leading car dealerships, Caffyns.

With 10 franchises in 18 locations across Sussex, Kent and Hampshire Caffyns are approved repairers for leading insurance companies and car manufactures such as Vauxhall, Chevrolet, Land Rover, Volkswagen, Audi, Volvo, Skoda, Peugeot, Ford and Jaguar.

SWR will manage the waste from Caffyns locations, under a new simplified single contract, which involves facilitating a systematic way of processing and handling waste streams. SWR will also ensure that Caffyns comply with the strict legislation surrounding waste management in the automotive industry.

From bumpers to batteries, the automotive repair industry can produce many different waste streams, which are subject to a wide array of legislation and best practice for disposal, as Angus MacDonald, Chairman of SWR, explains: “Waste from car servicing workshops and body shops is often complicated and time consuming to manage. The process of repairing cars produces a lot of bulky recyclable waste and an array of chemical and other hazardous waste which must be disposed of in a controlled manner.

“In order to gain a thorough understanding of the types and quantities of waste produced by Caffyns across their sites we first conducted a waste audit. We were then able to develop a bespoke range of options specific to Caffyns that will streamline their waste process, maximise recycling and reduce costs.”

To help implement and maximise the effectiveness of the new waste system, SWR conducted training sessions with the Caffyns management and staff.

SWR will also provide detailed reporting on Caffyns’ recycling performance, which will enable them to monitor their progress and demonstrate their green credentials to customers and stakeholders.

John Church at Caffyns, said: “We are fully committed to operating with minimal impact to the environment and our new efficient waste management programme demonstrates this. SWR’s waste management solution not only helps us to achieve our commitment to the environmental, but also ensures that we are legally compliant.

“Through SWR, we were able to establish a single point of contact for all of our waste issues across our various sites. SWR also provide us with regular recycling and carbon savings reports, which enable us to record real results.”

The waste management system put in place at Caffyns is expected to reduce waste costs by 14% and increase recycling levels to 75%.
