The Recycling Association has released a list of products that pose the biggest challenge for recycling and reuse, as well as announcing the launch of the Plastics Economy Innovation Prize. Here, Nik Spencer, inventor of the Home Energy Recovery Unit (HERU), comments:

“It is great to see Prince Charles launching The Plastics Economy Innovation Prize and taking an active role in tackling the domestic waste issues we are facing head on, this is exactly what we have been trying to achieve with HERU.

“Looking at the list published by the Recycling Association, and Simon Ellin’s worst offenders, HERU is capable of turning all of these items into a sustainable energy source for the home, including Pringles tubes, Lucozade Sport bottles, cleaning spray bottles, black plastic food trays and whisky packaging.

“We cannot go on viewing waste in the manner we currently do, it’s time we viewed it as something valuable. It’s great to see this being brought into the public consciousness and this will hopefully herald the start of the changes required to totally rethink what we do with waste.

“HERU converts all household waste, including food to paper to bones and even nappies, into a clean, sustainable fuel source that is used to heat water for the home. It does this using pyrolysis, which is a process of heating materials in the absence of oxygen, resulting in the production of energy rich combustible gas, liquid and solid fuels.”
