Changes to Peterborough Energy from Waste (EfW) Plant Get Go Ahead

Peterborough City Council planning and environmental protection committee approved – with only one abstention and no objections – Viridor’s Section 73 application for an 85,000 tonnes-per-annum Energy from Waste (EfW) facility in Fengate, Peterborough recently.

The almost unanimous committee’s positive decision was welcomed by Viridor’s head of projects Robert Ryan. He said: “We proposed changes to the existing planning permission to maximise the benefits from the proposal to the council and the local area. Our proposals will result in additional efficiency from the plant and a smaller building, all of which contribute towards cutting the city’s waste disposal costs and carbon footprint”

The proposed EfW facility will have a capacity to treat around 85,000 tonnes of residual, non-recyclable waste with substantial environmental benefits including the landfill diversion of circa 94 per cent of waste delivered to the facility and the generation of up to 7.25MW of electricity to be supplied to the National Grid – enough energy to power about 15 per cent of all homes in Peterborough.

Viridor’s proposal will result in additional benefits for the local economy – particularly important in the current economic environment – including the creation of 25 permanent jobs and hundreds during construction.
