Johnson Matthey, a world leader in the supply of catalysts for a wide range of applications in the international process industry, has recently installed a new manufacturing process at the Clitheroe works in the UK.

ACWA AIR (UK) was contracted by Johnson Matthey Catalysts to design, manufacture, test, install and commission a process scrubbing system for their new facility in Lancashire.

ACWA AIR designed and manufactured the system in accordance with Johnson Matthey Specifications to PD5500. The scrubbing system comprises two absorber/scrubbers with associated plant and equipment mounted on a common skid. The system is fully automated and independently controlled through a SCADA system.

Heat of absorption of the feed gas in the first stage scrubber is removed by passing the recirculating scrubber liquor through a plate heat exchanger, using plant cooling water.

The second stage scrubber then further purifies the gas stream before it is returned to the process. A precise temperature control is necessary in the recycle gas stream before reintroducing it to the catalyst production process.
