Sustainable and biodegradable alternative to Expanded Polystyrene (EPS) packaging material

S.Lab, a Ukrainian startup that has developed an innovative packaging solution made from agricultural waste and mycelium roots, has won this year's Green Alley Award. The award, Europe's first startup prize for the circular economy, recognizes S.Lab's efforts to provide a sustainable and biodegradable alternative to Expanded Polystyrene (EPS) material. The packaging solution is made entirely from hemp stems and mycelium roots and is 100% biodegradable.

Jan Patrick Schulz, CEO of Landbell Group and creator of the award, praised S.Lab for its contribution to the circular economy, which addresses the environmental burden caused by packaging waste. Schulz emphasized that S.Lab's innovative solution has similar properties to EPS, but is made from plant-based components, specifically hemp and mushroom roots. S.Lab plans to build small factories with a closed-loop automated production line in 40-foot containers to produce the packaging solution.

Julia Bialetska, Co-Founder and CEO of S.Lab, expressed her delight at winning the award and explained that the prize money of €25,000 will be used to commercialize the product and create a more circular future. She believes that the packaging industry needs to adopt more circular economy practices, such as packaging as a service, to decrease waste generation.

The Green Alley mentoring sessions allowed the finalists to work with experts on their startup concepts and receive feedback on their ideas and business models. The six finalists, including S.Lab, presented their business ideas to the audience and the jury in live pitches during the evening event.

Since 2014, Landbell Group has awarded companies whose business models are in the areas of digital circular economy, recycling, or waste prevention with the Green Alley Award. This year's six finalists included a sustainability platform for the textile industry, an independent sourcing platform for sustainable packaging, and a technological machine to analyse plastic composition. Schulz commended S.Lab for its strategy to scale its biodegradable packaging solution in a short timeframe and its potential to make a significant difference for the circular economy.
