Waste Management

Biodigester helps commercial operators dispose of food waste.

Aug 05 2019

Power Knot, the market leader in products that process waste food in commercial foodservice operations, has appointed WMR Waste Solutions (WMR) as its exclusive distributor in the UK and Eire, responding to

the growing regional demand for its range of LFC® biodigesters and SBT™ bin tippers.

WMR has deep experience with commercial, construction, and hazardous waste and helps companies recycle, process, or dispose of their wastes in a responsible, sustainable, and cost-effective manner. WMR has established a major presence in the UK’s leisure market and has significant experience with holiday parks, hotels, restaurants, and entertainment centres. By partnering with Power Knot, WMR can expand the range of recycling options it can offer its commercial foodservice clients — especially those that are not easily serviced by its waste pickup network.

As a major contributor to global carbon emissions, food waste is coming under increasing government scrutiny in the UK. Several initiatives are underway to tackle the £3bn of food wasted in the foodservice and hospitality sector every year, including the government’s ‘Step Up to the Plate’ symposium on food waste, which encourages organizations to make commitments to measure and reduce their own food waste, as well as the ‘Guardians of Grub’ and ‘Food Waste: Bad Taste’ campaigns developed by WRAP and the Sustainable Restaurant Association, respectively.

“Many of our foodservice and hospitality customers are eager to divert food waste from downstream processing,” said Derek Cornwell, director at WMR Waste Solutions Limited. “By partnering with Power Knot, we can now offer them a proven onsite food waste solution that can be scaled from local restaurants to national hospitality and entertainment businesses.”

“WMR’s existing account base, coupled with their strong technical background and knowledge of Power Knot products, make them an ideal partner to expand our footprint in the UK,” said Iain Milnes, president of Power Knot. “Working together, we can help organizations in the public and private sectors reduce carbon emissions and meet their sustainability and corporate responsibility goals.”

How the Power Knot LFC biodigester works
The LFC biodigester is a practical alternative to the traditional disposal of waste food. It uses a series of processes in which micro¬organisms break down biodegradable material in the presence of oxygen. The LFC environment accelerates the digestion of most food products within 24 hours by using a proprietary mixture of microbes and enzymes. The output is grey water that is environmentally safe, and suitable for discharge down the drain or to enrich landscapes. Almost all waste food from an industrial kitchen, including fruits, vegetables, meat, fish, cheese, bread, rice, and noodles can go into the LFC biodigester, and the machine can compost both raw and cooked foods. The process is totally green because it uses no chemicals.

Supports sustainability goals
Government agencies are especially concerned about deriving key performance indicators of all sustainability initiatives. To support environmental sustainability reporting, all Power Knot LFC units can upload detailed performance data to the LFC Cloud. Sustainability managers can then view how much waste food has been processed by any machine or site, and gain insights into the reduction of carbon emissions to support wider reporting requirements.
