Contract Signed for New Energy From Waste Plant in Teesside, UK

SITA UK and Hitachi Zosen Inova (Switzerland) recently signed an EPC turnkey contract for a new two line energy-from-waste facility adjacent to an existing facility in Teesside. The plant is being developed for the South Tyne and Wear Waste Management Partnership as part of a Private Finance Initiative deal. The project is the most recent of numerous collaborations between SITA UK, its sister companies, and the Zurich based company. In 2008 SITA selected the Swiss technology provider - then still active under the name of Von Roll Inova AG – as their EPC turnkey partner for another EfW plant in Roosendaal, Netherlands.

The two new lines will treat 260,000 tonnes of waste per annum, including 190,000 tonnes for the South Tyne and Wear Waste Management Partnership which comprises Gateshead, South Tyneside and Sunderland councils. It will produce electricity for the supply of approximately 30’000 households and potentially heat for local consumers. Thanks to energy-from-waste technology, the plant will help to reduce the output of CO2 by 64’000 tonnes per year. Handover of the new lines is planned for early 2014.
