Waste management firm becomes more energy efficient

Dec 19 2012

A waste management firm in the north-east has switched to energy efficient lighting - making it one of the greenest and environmentally friendly waste management services in the country.

Not only will this save the healthcare waste management firm a lot in energy bills, it also keeps it in line with the government's 20/20/20 emission targets.

According to the government's targets, greenhouse gas emissions should be cut by 20 per cent, while renewable energy sources should be increased by 20 per cent.

Overall, the European Union hopes to see a 20 per cent improvement in energy efficiency across the continent.

SRCL, which calls itself "the UK’s leading healthcare services company," is based in Newcastle.

It has been reported that SRCL is the first healthcare waste management firm in the area to implement such changes.

The new, energy efficient lighting has been installed following the advice of Lockwell Electrical Distributors and lighting manufacturer Premium Lighting Solutions (PLS), which explained to the business the economic and environmental benefits of using high level luminaries.

Ian Stidolph, plant manager at SRCL said: "The audit that PLS carried out not only provided the correct lighting for our facility but incorporated energy efficiency and cost savings in a very short space of time. The job was carried out in a prompt fashion and in a professional manner."

Lisa Hammond, branch manager at Lockwell Electrical Distributors’ at Gateshead has encouraged other businesses to follow in the footsteps of SRCL.

"While businesses are often concerned about the upheaval and expense of modernising their lighting, SRCL’s experience shows that actually the process can be incredibly smooth and that the results – in terms of money, energy and CO2 – can be substantial," she said.

SRCL hopes to continue with environmentally friendly implements in the new year.
