Sustainable Waste Management Solution for North London Waste Authority
Apr 30 2012
AMEC (UK), the international engineering and project management company, has been awarded a major framework contract by the North London Waste Authority to help deliver state-of-the-art new waste services infrastructure for north London.
AMEC will provide technical and planning services to the Authority as it moves towards implementing two major contracts for Waste Services and Fuel Use. The value of AMEC’s contract, which will run for nearly five years, has not been announced.
Under the Waste Services contract the Authority will provide a sustainable waste management solution including building and operating new composting, recycling and waste processing facilities. Waste that cannot be recycled or composted will then be used to create Solid Recovered Fuel (SRF). The Fuel Use contract will provide the best solution for recovering as much value as possible for north London from this SRF. The Authority will spend some £2-3 billion on these initiatives over the next 25 years.
As part of the contract AMEC will meet respective bidders, evaluate final tenders and help the Authority fine tune proposed solutions. The company will also provide support and advice to the Authority’s contract management team on implementation of the contracts and, in particular, help monitor the construction and commissioning phases.
“The need to treat waste as a resource means it is really important to identify the best technical solutions to maximise recycling and composting, recover energy and reduce waste sent to landfill,” explains Francis Crozier, director of AMEC’s waste management group. “We are very pleased to be working with the North London Waste Authority to help deliver this crucial project. It will provide real environmental benefits for society and help manage the domestic waste from over 1.7 million residents across north London.”
