Shanks Stores Up Savings With Aganto

Oct 27 2009

The East London division of independent European waste management company Shanks, has specified a temporary building from Aganto to provide a highly cost effective storage solution at one of its unique Biological Materials Recycling Facilities in London.

Shanks East London works closely with public and private sector customers to increase recycling and reduce waste sent to landfill sites by proving more sustainable solutions.

To fulfil its 25-year contract with the East London Waste Authority (ELWA) and meet targets to recycle 33% of the area’s household waste, the company has adopted a revolutionary new approach to waste management and has invested £100 million in the construction of two Biological Materials Recycling Facilities (Bio MRFs) at its sites across East London.

Following completion of the major construction works, Shanks East London also required a supplementary facility for the storage of new equipment and ancillary parts and specified a cost effective temporary building from Aganto at its Frog Island site in Rainham.

Aganto supplied a 150 sq m non-insulated aluminium framed unit with PVC roof and single skin security steel cladding side walls, complete with lighting and racking to allow the 4.2 m height of the unit to be fully utilised. The building was installed by Aganto’s professional site management team in just three days.

Roger Blackwell, Engineering Manager at Shanks comments: “A temporary storage building met all our requirements at a fraction of the cost of a permanent building.
The speed and ease with which the building was transported and erected also meant that it was available to use almost immediately.

“Going forward, the modular construction makes the building equally simple to dismantle and relocate to one of our other sites across the UK or Europe in the future if necessary, giving us maximum flexibility for minimum investment.”

Aganto is experiencing increased demand from the waste industry in response to the need for more efficient waste processing solutions, continued growth in the industry as environmental legislation tightens and the investment by major manufacturers and other blue chip organisations in on-site recycling and waste processing facilities.

With wall heights up to 6m, clear spans up to 30m wide and unlimited lengths, Aganto’s temporary buildings are ideal for the storage and processing of large amounts of waste, including operational activity requiring heavy industrial equipment.
