PDM Group wins food waste recycling contract with BaxterStorey and Land Securities
May 28 2009
Commercial caterer, BaxterStorey, has awarded the food waste collection and recycling contract for Land Securities’ headquarters on The Strand to PDM Group, the UK’s largest food waste recycler.
With strong corporate environmental targets, Land Securities wanted to ensure that the food waste from the company’s canteen did not go to landfill. To deliver this requirement, BaxterStorey has joined forces with PDM, which has been handling food waste for more than 80 years, to collect the waste produced from food preparation and left-overs on a weekly basis. Once the food waste is collected, PDM recycles it into heat and electricity at one of its biomass-to-energy plants. Carl McAleer, general catering & hospitality manager at BaxterStorey, said: “Land Securities takes its environmental responsibilities extremely seriously and finding a sustainable solution for the waste produced in the kitchens was an important part of our service. PDM was able to provide us with a service that not only diverts this waste from landfill, but also uses it to produce renewable energy which really fits with Land Securities’ ethos.” Catering staff on The Strand dispose all food and drink waste into a dedicated bin in the kitchen. Once full, this is then emptied into a large external bin which has a cornstarch liner to keep it clean but enables food waste to go straight to the recycling process. PDM works with companies throughout the food chain to provide food waste processing and recycling services. The company currently handles around 1.5 million tonnes of food waste each year and is developing a network of biomass to energy plants throughout the UK to increase sustainable food waste recycling, reduce food miles and support renewable energy targets.Events
