Grontmij wins two major international wind farm projects

Apr 02 2010

Grontmij in Denmark has recently won two major international consulting contracts for wind farm projects in Egypt and Thailand. Grontmij will work as the client’s consultant for the next six to seven years on two major international wind farm projects in the Gulf of El-Zayt (Egypt) and Lam Thakong (Thailand). The total contract value of these projects is € 4.39 million and Grontmij’s revenue totals € 2.15 million over the course of the projects.

Wind farm in El-Zayt, Egypt
The project in Egypt is the first large-scale wind farm development in the region of El-Zayt. It is financed by the Egyptian government, the EU and Germany’s KfW Bank. The wind farm (200 MW) will be built 130 km north of the Hurghada holiday centre. The total contract value of this project is € 3.24 million and Grontmij’s revenue totals € 1.35 million over the course of the project.
Grontmij will supply amongst others the CDM documentation (Contract Design Management) for this project. In addition it will manage the implementation of avoidance measures with respect to the many migratory birds which pass through the region twice a year in large numbers and at relatively low altitude.

First phase of the wind farm in Thailand
The project in Thailand is one of the first large-scale onshore wind farms in the country (50MW). The site is situated on a plateau 600-700 meters above sea level in Lam Thakong, 200 km north east of Bangkok. This project is the first phase of the 50MW wind farm with a second phase to come. The local developer is Ringergy Ltd. The total contract value of this project is € 1.15 million and Grontmij’s revenue totals € 800,000 over the course of the project.

Grontmij’s role
On both projects Grontmij’s role will involve the project management, project and conceptual design, electrical grid, foundations, access roads, infrastructure tendering, and inspection during the guarantee period, as well as build facilities for the work force. Divisional director Arne Buhl Petersen from Grontmij in Denmark says: ‘Because the project is very large scale and there are also plans for subsequent wind farm projects in the Red Sea region we see many opportunities for us. In addition these two projects will demonstrate our extensive expertise when it comes to wind power and establish Grontmij as the consultant for international wind farm projects’.
