Test Method for Cetane Analyser Now Included in the EN590 Diesel Specifications

Dec 11 2017

The European Standard CSN EN590 specifies requirements and test methods for marketed and delivered automotive diesel fuel. It is applicable to automotive diesel fuel for use in diesel engine vehicles designed to run on automotive diesel fuel containing up to 7% Fatty Acid Methyl Ester.

Accurate analysis of Derived Cetane Number (DCN) is an important tool for diesel and biodiesel fuel blenders and refineries to maintain fuel consistency and quality. Existing technologies such as CFR Engine and CVCC methods do not meet present market requirements with their high investment and operational cost. Herzog by PAC pioneered the Cetane ID 510 instrument: a unique technology that is proven to provide the best precision in the market for determining DCN of all types of diesel fuels, biodiesel, FAME, HVO, BTL, and GTL. It is a compact, easy to use, and fully automated analyser, that offers excellent return on investment, and that is in compliance with today’s safety requirements. The CID 510 is in perfect correlation to ASTM D613, and approved as standard ASTM 7668. Optimus Instruments has over 30 years of experience in the sales, installation and maintenance of petroleum analysers all across the market and can service, sell and install the CID 510 accross Europe.

The current version of the EN590 now includes an addendum mentioning both the use of the CID510 and its test method EN16715. In 2014 a new patented test method ASTM D7668 for CID 510 was published and is accepted in specs for diesel (ASTM D975), Biodiesel B100 (ASTM D6751) and Biodiesel B6 toB20 (ASTM D7467). In 2015 a new European test method EN 16715 for CID 510 was published and was accepted in the EN 590 diesel specs last year.
