WABAG Wins an Order in Turkey Worth EUR 7.7 million

In autumn 2010, VA TECH WABAG GmbH founded a new subsidiary in Istanbul and now after just over a year, can book a new order from Turkey. In the course of an international tendering process, WABAG secured the contract for the Siverek wastewater plant by submitting the most economic quotation. The decisive factor in this success was the modern design offered, which incorporates anaerobic sludge treatment and subsequent biogas production and thus provides an in-house energy supply that will clearly and sustainably cut plant operating costs. The mechanical/biological treatment plant, with a capacity of around 86,000 PE, will secure wastewater and sludge quality that is in line with EU standards. Start-up of the plant will commence in June 2013.

In 2010, VA TECH WABAG GmbH in Vienna decided to invest in the growing Turkish market for water and wastewater plants through the foundation of a subsidiary in Istanbul. Now, just over 12 months later, the young company has secured its first local contract. At the end of December 2011, a contract was signed with the client, the Ministry of the Environment and Urbanisation, for the completion of the new Siverek wastewater treatment plant as the general contractor. The order has a value of EUR 7.7 million and the project will be jointly financed by the European Union and the Republic of Turkey.

The treatment plant will handle and dispose of 17,040 m3/d of municipal wastewater from the district of Siverek, which is located in south-eastern Turkey near the city of Urfa. The treatment scheme consists of mechanical and biological treatment using the activated sludge process with subsequent anaerobic sludge treatment and dewatering. During anaerobic stabilisation, the sludge will be fermented in bioreactors and the flammable gas thus released will then flow into a cogeneration plant, while the waste heat will be employed for the heating of the bioreactors. This resource-protective concept means that the plant can produce a sizable percentage of its energy requirements autonomously with a resultant major reduction in operating costs.

The contract covers the realisation of Stage I of the plant for some 86,000 PE, however the design also accounts for the extension to 110,500 PE and capacity of around 20,000 m3/d foreseen in Stage II. Commissioning of stage I of the plant will commence in June 2013 with WABAG assuming responsibility for the design, engineering, supply of electro-mechanical equipment, installation and construction.
