Metso delivers automation to two greenfield energy-from-waste plants in the UK

Metso (Austria) will deliver advanced automation solutions to two greenfield energy-from-waste plants to be located in the UK and be built by Von Roll Inova Environmental Technology Ltd.

The first of the two orders will be supplied to Riverside Resource Recovery Ltd’s plant, which will be the UK’s largest energy-from-waste facility when completed in 2011. It will be located in Belvedere, London, and will process 585,000 tons of municipal and commercial waste per year on average, generating 72 MW of electrical energy.

The second order will be supplied to Veolia Environmental Services’ 19.4 MW energy-from-waste plant, which will be located in Newhaven, East Sussex, and which will go on stream in 2011, too.

Metso’s delivery to the both plants will consist of a metsoDNA distributed control system, an integrated boiler protection system and an information management system. The solutions will be used to manage operations and information at the incineration plants. Metso was chosen as the DCS supplier for the largest energy-from-waste plant ever built by Von Roll Inova, the Riverside plant, because of its good performance during two earlier projects at A.S.A. Zistersdorf in Austria and at BIR Avallsenergi in Norway.

In England, only 30% of the household rubbish is currently recycled. London landfills 53% of its municipal solid waste and due to the lack of waste treatment facilities in the capital, most of it is transported to counties surrounding it. Since available landfilling space is running out, the government is looking for new recycling and recovery alternatives.
