High levels of air pollution seen over Newry, Northern Ireland

Feb 24 2013

The Department of Environment has warned of high pollution levels over Newry in Northern Ireland.

Furthermore, moderate levels have been observed in Armagh, Ballymena, Belfast, Lisburn and north Down.

However, "moderate levels of particulate matter and nitrogen dioxide" have been seen in Londonderry, according to the department.

It believes the pollution is likely to be from a build up of emissions from home heating systems and vehicles during the current cold weather.

"While the cold and settled weather continues through the rest of this week, there is a possibility that high or very high levels of pollution could be seen in urban centres across Northern Ireland," the department said.

It warned that people with certain conditions need to be extra wary during this time.

"During periods of high air pollution the symptoms of people with lung or heart disease may worsen. Healthy people are unlikely to experience any ill effects."

The department also recommended some steps people can take to help reduce pollution.

These include avoiding burning solid fuels where possible, only burning smokeless fuels in smoke control areas, and avoiding lighting bonfires when pollution levels are high.

Furthermore, before getting behind the wheel motorists should ask themselves whether they really need the car, according to the experts.

People who do need to drive should switch off the engine if they expect to be stationary for more than a few minutes, and ensure they are driving smoothly, it said. This will both save the motorist fuel and money while also helping the environment.

This follows news that a presentation on how local authorities can use planning agreement fund air quality monitoring in a bid to slash air pollution is to be given at the Air Quality and Emissions show in Telford in March.
